Founded by anti-slavery activists in 1854 in Ripar, Wisconsin, the Republican Party had its initial base in the Northeast and Midwest. Primarily created to oppose the expansion of slavery to Texas, the party first came to power in 1860 when Abraham Lincoln won the presidency. The GOP held its first official meeting on July 6, 1854 in Jackson, Michigan. One of the goals set by the party was to modernize the United States by focusing on relevant matters related to banking, railroads, industry and cities, and higher education. During the American Civil War, led by President Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Party fought for the Union and led the Reconstruction. However, in the years that followed, internal struggle and intrigues wreaked havoc on the GOP and they were out of the limelight for a brief period. In 1896, the Republicans regained lost ground when William McKinley became president. As president, William McKinley emphasized and concentrated more on railroads, industry, finance, and the middle class. After his term, Theodore Roosevelt took over the post in 1901 and thus began one of the United States’ most dynamic periods. That period established the GOP as a party focused on business, economic libertarianism, nationalism, and conservatism. The Republican Party remains true to these principles up to now. In 2004, the Republican Party had around 55 million registered voters. At present, 19 of the United States’ presidents have been Republicans. Aside from Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt, some of the most popular Republican presidents are Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, George Walker Bush, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford.
