Hope of Compensation for Pleural Plaques Sufferers

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that the Justice Secretary, Jack Straw, will soon be addressing the issue of compensation for the Pleural Plaques victims in England and Wales. He also said that the insurance companies’ possible dues to the victims would be assessed according to the laws.

The Prime Minister’s announcement came while answering Labour MP, Stephen Hepburn’s question regarding the issue of compensation to those affected by the disease. Mr. Hepburn asked the government to initiate some relief measures for the several thousands of victims of the disease across England and Wales. He also said that the laws were clearly unjust to the sufferers of asbestosis.

The House of Lords had earlier passed a legislation saying that compensation to those suffering from asbestosis will not be awarded. However, a month ago the MSPs reversed the ruling by voting in favour of compensation being granted to those suffering from the disease in Scotland.

The HSE has often warned employers and workers against prolonged exposure to asbestos. The disease is caused when asbestos settles in lungs and corrodes them, causing long-term damage. The disease affects a large number of workers across the country for no fault of their own, and so far, no cure has been discovered.
